Music | I actively try to expand my tastes and listen to 2-3 new albums a week, so my tastes are hard to pin down. The Raincoats self-titled album—an experimental post-punk album that doesn't take itself too seriously—is my favorite album of all time. Partita for 8 voices is the last album that made me cry. |
Books | Portrait of a Lady has molded my brain more than any other book. Most fiction I read can be categorized either as intense, modernist stuff with often little plot and sentences that are too long (like Sebald or Proust) or the lapidary, tightly wound stuff that people in MFA writing workshops worship (like Marilynne Robinson or Saul Bellow).
I'm obsessed with long-form journalism, especially The New Yorker. The sentences in that magazine are so well-chiseled. I love everything Amia Srinivasan has ever written. She's my favorite feminist theorist along with Valerie Solanas and Asher Roth when he was like ""I love women"". |
Film/TV | Whit Stillman, Joe Pera, Sans Soleil, I Think You Should Leave, Jeanne Dielman |
Interests/hobbies | I'm a journalist so I spend a ton of time writing. I like working out and listening to podcasts. |

Anything else you want to share | Do you ever wonder how many of Joanna Newsom's songs are about Andy Samberg? Does her music lose it's otherworldy mystique when you realize they're complex allegories about the guy who wrote Dick-in-a-Box? |
